Mentioned by Dickens and Hogarth, Scratching Fanny was a ghost purported to haunt a small alley called Cock Lane, between St Paul’s and Smithfield. The existence or otherwise of the Cock Lane Ghost became a great talking point in Regency London, with Anglicans and Methodists taking sides over the religious ramifications of Scratching Fanny in the afterlife.
