Hard by Notting Hill Gate tube station there is a breathtakingly expensive fish shop. I once bought a moderate-sized halibut steak there and was charged £11.50. Latterly, however, there has been a change in this sea-boutique, a small sign perhaps that the Osborne squeeze has struck even here. Boards have been appearing outside advertising bargains like 3 mackerel for £6 (or something like that). The pick of these boards for readers of Dabblerish tendencies is the one that read ‘Catch of the Day: Crab Cakes.’
All of which is a roundabout way of saying I am tentatively re-emerging into cyberspace – so get over to my place now or this crab cake gets it.
It’s the old, old story. He disappears for months, he pops in, mutters something about crab cakes and then disappears again.
He does. I’ve regularly clicked on Thought Experiments since 30th, August, 2010, only to find Bob Dylan and the Pope stubbornly refusing to be relegated by BA’s later thoughts on ‘The Mind-Numbing Dopiness of Nick Clegg’ or ‘Apple Inc. – Is It Turning Into Granny Smith?’ Anyway, however long this return lasts before he again packs away his mighty quill, it’s good news.
My workplace canteen recently had
Catch of the Day: Fish and Chips.
Amazing what people throw away…
