Round Blogworld Quiz #10: The Solution

Yes, a clear cream bun for Worm this week. Well done to everyone else who got elements. Click continue for the full answer…

Earlier we asked the 10th RB Quiz question, namely:

What links Noddy Holder to Flora Poste’s father, the Rocky Horror Picture Show, meritorious American aviators, poor visibility between Cyril and Seymour, and what went into Harold’s eye?

And the answer is… BBC comedy series Porridge!

The classic prison-based sitcom, starring Ronnie Barker as con Norman Stanley Fletcher, ran from 1974 to 1977, and has been repeated pretty constantly since.

Noddy Holder was of course the frontman of SladeHMP Slade being the setting for Porridge.

Flora Poste, the heroine of Cold Comfort Farm, was played on UK television in 1995 by Kate Beckinsale, who has since become a Hollywood star. Her father, Richard Beckinsale, played the lovably naïve Lennie Godber in Porridge. The 1979 spin-off Porridge movie was to be Beckinsale’s last completed work – he died in March that year of a heart attack, at the age of just 31.

The link between Porridge and The Rocky Horror Picture Show is provided by perennial panto dame and 2007 I’m a Celebrity winner Christopher Biggins. He played Lukewarm in Porridge and had a small but conspicuous role as a Transylvanian in Rocky Horror.

The Principal Prison Officer at HMP Slade is the formidable Mr Mackay, played, funnily enough, by Fulton Mackay. The Mackay Trophy has been awarded for the ‘most meritorious flight of the year’ since 1911, and these days is handed out by the US Air Force.

Mackay’s sidekick was the pathetically eager-to-please Prison Officer Barrowclough. He was played by Brian Wilde, who also took the much-coveted role of ‘tall one in Last of the Summer Wine’ when he played Foggy. Foggy was preceded by Cyril (played by Michael Bates) and succeeded by Seymour (Michael Aldridge).

Finally, what went into Harold’s eye, according to legend of the Battle of Hastings, was an arrow. And who would have made that arrow? Why, a ‘Norman fletcher’ of course, boom boom!
