The Dabbler’s Round Blogworld Quiz #10

Here’s this week’s fiendish Round Blogworld Quiz question (see the previous ones and their solutions here). As usual, find the link between these cryptic clues. A point for each item you get, and an imaginary cream bun if you get them all. If you get the link straight off, please don’t give it away too early!

Here’s the question then (a bit less highbrow this week and I’m afraid it really helps to be British for this one…)

What links Noddy Holder to Flora Poste’s father, the Rocky Horror Picture Show, meritorious American aviators, poor visibility between Cyril and Seymour, and what went into Harold’s eye?

Clues will be given as necessary, and the solution will appear later.

Flora Poste is the girl in Cold Comfort Farm. The only thing I know about her father (except that he is dead) is that they keep saying that a wrong was done to him. I don’t think you find out what that was though.

She is, but you need to think wider here, Adelephant.

before I start googling, I assume the thing in Harold’s eye is an arrow

Slade did a song called Done Me Wrong. Any relevance?

Slade are relevant, but not that song.

Hmm – this is quite a tricky one. I was thinking about magnificent men in their flying machines, but I think there is only one American in the film, so either it refers to a pair/group e.g. the Wright brothers, or it is more general. Am I fishing?

      Nowhere near yet, i’m afraid.

It’s quite a lowbrow one this week.

    Foggy is correct.

You’re half right about the manifestation of Flora Poste I have in mind.

Could Flora Poste’s father be Richard Beckinsale, father of Kate B. who played Flora in the 1990s TV version?

If so, I am aware of a somewhat lowbrow link between Richard B., Noddy H. and Brian Wilde, the actor who played ‘Foggy’ Dewhurst.

the arrow clue is less of a noun and more of a related profession

No… Worm I think has the right answer for that one.

Oh I see it now …

I”ve been working on a parallel solution to do with Coronation Street and strangely enough most of it fits (all those named were in it at some point, including Noddy Holder: Eric Spear wrote the music).

I’m not very good at this, but was Noddy Holder Flora Poste’s father (There is a likeness)? Noddy was, allegedly, a rocker, therefore linking seamlessly to the Rocky Horror Show. Regarding aviators, Noddy, when in full Brummie flow would regularly say: “Roight bruvver” when addressing his band members. In referring to his short-sightedness, he would, in that endearing Midlands way, refer to his eyes as ‘Cyril’ and ‘Seymour’, named after his local opticians. I’m struggling with the last part; did Harold get grit in his eye when Abramovich wafted his chequebook at the Battle of Stamford Bridge.

I’m stumped by the aviator one. The only things I can think of are to do with a pilot episode, or something to do with the Honourable Mr Justice (meritorious?) but I can’t make either fit. Clue?

I’ve got the whole lot now!

    answer: Porridge
noddy holder is from slade – HMP Slade
Flora Poste’s father was Richard Beckinsale – Godber in Porridge
Christopher Biggins was in RHPS and also in Porridge
meritorious American aviators refers to the Mackay Trophy awarded every year to the most meritorious american aviator,
poor visibility between Cyril and Seymour refers to foggy played by Brian Wilde who was in Porridge,
and what went into Harold’s eye? – Fletch, the affectionate shortening of Ronnie Barker’s character Fletcher in Porridge!

    cream bun!!! haha
