This week’s devilishly fiendish Round Blogworld Quiz question (see the previous ones and their solutions here) has been set by expert solver and friend of The Dabbler Jonathan Law. As usual, find the link between these cryptic clues. A point for each item you get, and an imaginary cream bun of regal proportions if you get them all. If you get the link straight off, please don’t give it away too early!
What links Jane Parker’s other daughter to a son of the manse, Sid Vicious by another name, fox’s bones, and the place to go clubbing in Brisbane? The answer involves the surviving resident of Utopia Ltd, Stackton Tressell, and a football team who might go to the kitchen but forget why …
Clues will be given as necessary, and the solution will appear later.
All stumped eh? Might need to give some clues, JL…
Blimey, tis hard. Is the answer to the last one, Alzheimer Wanderers? Or possibly Woking Cardinals?
‘Woking Cardinals’ is correct, Ian.
Jane Parker was previously known as Jane Porter (but usually by neither surname).
Jane was Tarzan’s lady… played by Maureen O’Sullivan in one film. Her daughter is Mia Farrow (although there are others). Any good?
Is the son of the manse Gordon Brown? David Tennant?
Tarzan’s lady is correct, as is Gordon Brown.
David Tennant — no.
And, yes, there are other daughters.
(They’ve just more or less cracked it in the office here — and, no, I didn’t them give any extra clues.)
Is that Prudence?
Yup.
and is the Fox’s bones reference Temperance?
and Sid Vicious would be Justice?
and one could go clubbing in the Fortitude Valley.
Looks like you’ve got it, Adelephant.
Any thoughts on Stackton Tressell and Woking FC?
Well the Woking FC one is the Cardinals? Not sure about Stackton Tressell yet.
Historians have been foxed for centuries by the bare bones of recorded Tudor history. Even the great Starkey, that acute observer of neanderthal Australian womanising, and author of ‘Clubbing In Brisbane’s Monastry Nightclub – A History’, confused Jane Parker, later Boleyn, Viscountess Rochford (1505 – 1542) with her second daughter, the pre-botoxian Sarah Jessica Parker, mainly because of Thomas More’s 1520 bestseller ‘Sex and Ye Olde City’, the follow-up to his ‘Utopia’ which, on publication, had been savaged by the reviewer Sidney Richie, later known as ‘Vicious Sid’, alias Sid Nostradamus, who in far-seeing predictive mode, and to the delight of his ‘Town and Country’ readers, wrote: “This idea of Utopia is pie in the bleedin’ sky, the biggest load of f****** bollocks imaginable. It will be unmatched in its f****** awfulness until the early 21st century when a hairy a**** f****** w***** of a prime minister, the son of a Scottish bible thumper, will drive England to rack and f****** ruin, and the legacy of Henry 8 and Lizzie 1 will be attached to greatness by a f****** hinge and bracket, and a great English football club will be managed by a bleedin’ Frenchman who will be forever sat with his team in his f****** kitchen, head in hands, asking “Where’s the cup, any cup, even a f****** pot cup? Have we forgotten what we’re f****** here for?”
That’s more like it!
Hinge and Bracket? Cardinal means hinge….?
Full house, Adelephant!
I think it must have been a busy day for everyone else.
