Spellbound

Today is the 95th anniversary of the birth of Ingrid Bergman. This year also happens to see the 65th anniversary of the release of Hitchcock’s Spellbound, in which she starred with Gregory Peck.

Those two are surely the most perfectly-formed and clean-cut leading actors cinema has ever seen. Strange that they were paired in a film about illness. But then it’s a strange film in a number of ways, not least the famous dream sequence designed by Salvador Dali. Not that the magic stopped there: the snow falling on Bergman during a skiing scene was actually cornflakes. Funny business.

But despite the unpromising subject matter from a box office perspective it was a hit. This photograph of the film’s premiere on Times Square with its giant images of ‘The Incomparable’ helps explain why:

Haven’t seen Inception. A combination of very mixed reviews and it being over two hours long has persuaded me to wait for the DVD.
