Sounds like a haunting book – their cries sound like a play on the idea that gulls contained the souls of dead sailors.

Patagonia is like a punch line in a joke told against the Welsh. It’s a miracle they survived but I suppose working in a mine helps toughen you up.

Gaw, your comments on the cries of gulls remind me of my favourite children’s book – When Marnie was There by Joan G Robinson. From what I recall of this mesmerising (at least to a 10 year old) Norfolk based tale, the seagulls are constantly crying out the words “pity me, oh pity me… ” Saudade is obviously normal for Norfolk.

The Welsh did apparently find Patagonia to their liking – heaven knows why – and Welsh-speaking communities still live there. As for gulls, they’re fast shedding all maritime associations (for me at least) – they’re now resident urban scavengers of the lowest sort. Kittiwakes, Fulmars and the like are another matter…
