The Dabbler’s Round Blogworld Quiz #6

Back by popular demand, here’s the first Round Blogworld Quiz question of 2011 (see the previous ones and their solutions here). As usual, find the link between these cryptic clues. A point for each item you get, and an imaginary cream bun if you get them all.
If somebody (well, Adelephant) guesses the overall answer instantly from one of the clues, please don’t give it away too early in the comments, but feel free to ‘drip-feed’ a couple of answers to show how clever you are…

Here’s the question then:

What connects a female Quaker to some cheap British smokes and Scorsese’s new Empire, a good cry, K9 and a certain Miss Kimberley Santos?

Clues will be given as necessary, and the solution will appear later.

I have a few ideas to mull over while I go to the shops.

Methinks a clue is in order…

The female Quaker was American and she invented the key to the answer. Miss Kimberley Santos is google-able.

Where would be without my regular dumb guess?

Does it have something to do with with things you can walk on. Flags, boardwalks, Pall Mall, the world…

Is a simple, everyday word the answer? Four clues involve it but I haven’t got the other two.

Hmmm, not quite that, but Pall Mall is relevant…

Mark – it is a one-word answer. Not an overly common, everyday word, particularly, but one that everyone knows.

A monopoly board! The Waterworks, Pall Mall… Er K9 which as everybody knows is the postcode for The Strand…

STAN YOU BEAUTY! I knew you’d get one eventually.

Monopoly is indeed the overall answer. Now for the individual bits….

    Waterworks yes, Pall Mall no.

This is Sandra (54). I’m Stan’s wife. Stan has just been taken to hospital after receiving a great shock. I thought you should know this since you might begin to wonder where he’s gone…

Nice website, by the way. I have curtains the same colour though they do have a floral design.

Have you ever thought of having a floral design?

It’s called Retroprogressive Green, Sandra, if you want to colour-match.

Congrats to Stan. That was a fast one. In the clouds again, I had straight up, roll up, stand up, choked up, not sure and runner up. Up on the brain, clearly.

Well done Stan – and Worm you’re right on the cigs though clearly wrong on the rest. The famous Monopoly robot?

You still need to explain Scorsese and Kimberley Santos.

Doesn’t the American Monopoly have some boardwalk in it?

No idea about Kimberley Santos but I bet she once went straight to jail, didn’t pass GO or pick up £200.

Yes to boardwalk… and no re Kim, but you’re thinking along the right lines…

The first commercially produced monolpoly sets represented locations in Atlantic City, which is the setting for Scorsese’s Boardwalk Empire.

Blimey that’s better than my answer, Jonathan. Mine is simpler and deliberately put in the same clause as the cheap cigs….

Isn’t one of the chance cards about being the runner up in a beauty contest?

K9 could be the little doggie that is one of the player pieces: Kim Santos is a former Miss World (yes, I googled) but i can’t mnake that fit at all.

Google is perfectly legit on these quizzes, JL. The idea is that they’re crafted so that even with google you need to think laterally.

Kim Santos was the runner up first.

Kimberley Santos, aka Miss World, was very obliging to anyone who wanted to look at her perfect norks – to the extent that they became known as the ‘community chest’?

    • Brit

      Less well done.
