The Dabbler’s Round Blogworld Quiz #5

Poacher is turning gamekeeper this week as brilliant puzzle-solver Adelephant poses her own fiendish Round Blogworld Quiz question (see the previous ones and their solutions here). But if she’s disqualified from answering it, then who will? Time to step up to the plate, Dabblers, as they say these days.
As usual, find the link between these cryptic clues. A point for each item you get, and an imaginary cream bun if you get them all.

Here’s the question then:

What links something potty in Wonderland with Potter’s washerwoman, an ambulant minty mascot, some northern trolls, a western flyer that nearly vindicates Aristotle, and something staring you in the face?

Clues will be given as necessary, and the solution will appear later.

Is the minty mascot the polar bear on Fox’s mints? If so, I’m guessing that the answer is they all sort-of hibernate. Polar bears go into a prolonged sleepy state while standing and even walking (hence ‘ambulant’?).

Not sure exactly how this fits, but Aristotle believed that swallows and other small birds hibernated in holes in the ground — something still widely believed in Gilber White’s day.

You’re very much on the right track there, Jonathan….

Well lots of butterflies hibernate – and I’ve often had a butterfly staring me in the face in that way they have, haven’t you?

Not intentionally, Mark, but if they do that would be a great coincidence.

Jonathan has the correct overall answer. The only bits not yet answered are:

a western flyer that nearly vindicates Aristotle, and something staring you in the face?

Full solution will be published later today!

Malty – are you referring to the time when the Moomins were threatened with destruction by the comet? Does that count as being ‘endangered’??

So that leaves one clue. I wonder if it’s a flyer the Hopi rather liked? Reading up on the mascot of Fox’s mints certainly reminds one of how times have changed. They wanted a mascot so they simply had one shot and stuffed.

  26. Brit
    December 22, 2010 at 10:04

The flyer is of the feathered kind, and is one of a kind.

  27. Worm

    is it the poorwill?
